Volunteering experience

I volunteered with CarismaPeru for five weeks. I spent most of my time working as a teacher’s aide in Huari, about 30 minutes from home by bus.

The school is situated in a semi rural area and provides early childhood education to around 20 children aged four and five years of age. There is also a daycare unit attached to the school where younger children are cared for while their parents work. The school provides much-needed and very effective access to early education for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

There are several other volunteer sites where volunteers can contribute. One is the “worker kids” facility, where school-age children are provided with supervision, meals and help with schoolwork before or after formal classes at their school, and the other is a medical clinic that caters to a community about 45 minutes’ drive from the city centre. This facility requires medically experienced volunteers.

All of the volunteer placement opportunities are best served by people with at least a basic level of Spanish.
My experience involved me staying in the home of Eli and Neto, with their two young children. I felt very welcome, and was treated very much like a member of the family. I can recommend the experience to prospective volunteers who want to experience life in Peru.

Volunteering experience

I had an incredible experience volunteering with Carisma Peru. Neto and Eli welcomed me into their home with open arms and made me feel like family the entire time. Volunteering at the childrens daycare was fantastic because I got to observe how Young children with a thirst for knowledge participated and in activities with enthusiasm.

The after school program opened my eyes to the beautiful spirit these children have, Their desire for education and willingness to learn new things as well as build relatiomships with those around them is inspiring. Helping them with their homework and playing with them until it was time for them to go home was the highlight of everyday I volunteered. I can’t wait for the opportunity to return to Huancayo and be involved with the great work that’s being accomplished at Carisma Peru.

Volunteering experience

I had an outstanding experience with Carisma Peru. First off, the family treated me and other participants like their own family. They’re world- class people. They’re loving, caring people who give everything they have for the betterment of their community.

In that light, as a medical student at the time, I volunteered in several various clinics/hospitals in the Huancayo area. A primary objective was educating & administering vaccinations at health clinics. This was a fulfilling job knowing the positive impact on global health. I was also given the chance to work with physicians/clinics in OB/GYN, neonatal, and primary care. In these settings, I observed and also assisted with history taking. These were invaluable opportunities from an international health exposure standpoint. Furthermore, we were afforded a great chance to bond with the community!

Outside of work, Carisma lead us to forging lifelong memories on a variety of excursions, activities. We were involved with an English tutoring program. And after sessions, we played soccer & volleyball with the locals. We went on an excursion the the jungle too! Lastly, Carisma help my group of colleagues set-up a hike to Machu Picchu. We are forever grateful.

To this day, as I now complete my residency in Internal Medicine, I fondly look back at the experience Carisma provided me. I am grateful for the love and support they showed.
Thank you Carisma!

CARISMAPERU was a life changing experience for me! I am overwhelmed by all the love and friendships I have made. Eli and Neto and their children are like my second family and made me feel so welcome. I loved working with the children and seeing the amazing sites such as Machu Pichu. This is a once in a life time experience you will never forget and need to be a part of!

Volunteering experience

Although there are numerous, rewarding volunteer opportunities at “Carisma Perú”, the greatest benefit of this organization is the abundant comfort and love from the directors/homestay hosts/superhumans of the organization. From day one, when the entire family came to greet us at the bus station, Neto, Ely, Mari Fer, and Renzo made us feel at home. It truly cannot be overstated how valuable it is to have this support system after long days of volunteering time and energy.

In addition to feeling at home, the various connections that “Carisma Perú” has around the community of Huancayo make it possible for anybody to have a rewarding experience in their volunteer placements. As a future medical student, this meant working at the “Centro de salud de Chupaca”. I worked closely with the doctors there, primarily sitting in on consultations and assisting with minor operations in the emergency room. I also had the opportunity to learn about the work of obstetricians, from maternal care prior to birth to postnatal evaluations of newborns. My 6 hours always passed quickly, simultaneously enthralled and overwhelmed by all there was to learn. Through this experience, I was afforded valuable insight into the Peruvian healthcare system and the day-to-day experience of working as a doctor there. I had extended conversations with almost all of the physicians at the clinic, learning about their philosophies towards medicine and approach to patient care.

Recognizing the universality of compassionate medicine was the most rewarding benefit for me through this volunteer experience. Peru is an entirely different medical world, but at it’s core it represents the same common goals as any other medical system. Compassionate, patient-centered care is the standard. Physician support of well-being and healthy lifestyle choices is the primary means.

I would highly recommend this program or any of Carismaperu’s placements to anyone interested in international volunteering. The care that Carismaperu has for its volunteers is unrivaled, and a positive support structure is instrumental to a rewarding volunteer experience. Thank you “Carisma Perú”!

Volunteering experience

So while the world has to the deal with all sorts of appalling events and people, I was lucky enough to spend some time with quite the opposite, people that embody nothing but innocence, good and hope. Two of these inspiring little humans you can see in this picture.

Born into less fortunate circumstances with parents struggling to provide or no parents at all, they have been forced to the streets to work. Day by day standing in the middle of busy streets and highways, selling Candy, fruit or doing acrobatics in front of cars to earn their own bread.

Chantal and Anita are one of around 2 million street worker kids in Peru. From very young ages they need to provide rather than attend school, which creates a vicious cycle.

The street worker kids in Huancayo can count themselves to the luckier ones.

Why?

Carismaperu! Established with the primary objective of developing the skills of deprived children who live in the rural and high Andean regions and giving them a chance to education.

Carismaperu are Eli and Neto a lovely couple , who have observed and recognized the serious social problems in their country and city and made it their mission to help change what needs urgent changing.

How?

Here they receive hot meals, celebrate holidays, and get educated in all fields from the hygienics of washing your hands to englsh, maths and more n the hope of giving them the resources necessary to break the cycle of poverty
Providing education to Street worker kids is one of their many projects, please share and check out their website: carismaperu.org

To enable all this Carismaperu relies heavily on volunteers from all fields (doctorsl, teachers, occupational psycholigist and simply kind people) and from across the globe.

These magical kids need me, you, us and because i know that my circle of friends consists of amazing , kind people our circles together can reach an even greater number of kind people that can continue helping these little humans in need. Please share and spread the Word.

Some stories of my stay in Huancayo and the kids will follow J
